  • I came home from college and thought I'd go back to the Portland Pub, my mom took me there for steak when I was younger and it was kind of sentimental for me.

Sadly, the food is not as good as I remember... However, the rest of the restaurant is EXACTLY as I remember it being... 15 years ago. The place is dark and dirty, hasn't been updated in a very long time.

The service was excellent however. Very friendly.

  • Order: Steak and fries.

  • We booked our annual get-together for a large group. It was my suggestion to use the Portland Pub, which turned out to be a huge mistake. We were not told of any events going on there that night when we booked for about 15-20 individuals. When you go to a pub, you do expect some music/noise, but nothing prepared us for what we would endure. There was a charity auction going on right behind us on the 'other side' of the pub. The auctioneer was using a microphone turned up full blast and yelling into it simultaneously. We were right near speakers and could not even hear the person next to us. We get together and meet once a year so this was extremely disappointing. When we asked the waitress if he could maybe 'not' use the microphone as it was extremely abrasive and we couldn't even catch up on what we'd all been up to at all - it was even hurting our ears, it was THAT loud - her snottily-delivered response was, "Well they're here every week and I'm not doing anything. They can do what they want."

No offer of anything other than that. There were even some sort of barriers there they could've closed to block off some of the noise between the two sections of the pub and she refused to do that as well. Nice.

The kindness continued after our visit - we all left much earlier than we had planned and the night was pretty much a wash. I felt badly because I had mentioned the pub as a good central location for us, etc and the food was usually decent, etc., so I wrote a letter to the manager to let him/her know about our experience. To this day (at least 6 months later), I have not received a response from this place of business.

So the message we got was: You group of teachers and your business mean nothing to us. I refuse to go back to the pub ever - this is not how you conduct business.

  • Order: Many different dishes in our large group.

Your saying that you wanted them to take the microphone away from a "CHARITY" auction, where they were allowing a group to raise money for charity?? You should have gone somewhere more anal

  • My wife and I often come to the Portland Pub for their "works" omelette, which is actually fairly good. Apparently they do steaks really well, but I've never bothered to try it, as I personally don't particularly care for the place and just don't go in when it isn't for a weekend-morning breakfast.

The Portland Pub & Steakhouse is in desperate need of what the British would call a "good bottoming out". It actually badly needs a complete overhaul of decor and layout. It is dark and cramped, the furniture is old, the wallpaper is old, ugly and peeling, and the whole place looks like it hasn't been dusted since 1985 or so. And considering it is a pub, it doesn't even really have a functioning BAR! Oh, it has one, but nobody sits there, as it is tiny, sits in a corner... etc. I could go on about the decor, but this is about the food, really.

I will allow as how the works omelette is quite tasty, full of lots of stuff... green sweet pepper, onion, bacon, sausage, ham, and cheese. Unfortunately the mushrooms appear (and taste) as if they're out of a can and not at all fresh, the home fries are from frozen, and the coffee, well... let's just say they need a better quality of coffee and leave it at that.

As to the rest of the menu, it is typical pub fare; deep-fried this, that and the other, steak & eggs, burgers, wings, etc. Nothing special here at all. So why do I come here? It's close to home, we know one of the owner's daughters, and... it's my wife's favorite breakfast spot.

Sure, I'll be back for breakfast. I'll go elswhere for other meals and decor.

Word of caution: They do NOT take debit cards! Cash or credit, no debit.

  • Order: "Works" Omelette, Coffee
