  • Your tenderloin tips are excellent but your chicken stir fry needs some work the last 2 times I have ordered it something tastes moldy I have determined it was the chicken in the last order as I payed more attention. Everything else the veggies and sauce taste great but the chicken tastes bad. I would like to order this again and if it happens again I will definitely complain.

  • My parents have always enjoyed tips from the Aquarius Tavern...as far back as I can remember, that's all they enjoyed. I realize now that's there speciality. Because I'm not a great fan of tips I have tried different meals, trying to find one that I love. I find the food too salty, one time I ordered wings and they tasted like a cleaner, not that I've personally drank Mr. Clean but you get my drift. When I returned these to our waiter, he just grumbled something and then laughed at me while I obviously interupted his conversation with the local bar girl. I was not impressed with the service, food or atmosphere. I won't be back to waste my time or money on this place! Oh and a huge facelift is much needed, staff and all!

  • I have been coming to "The AQ" on and off since I was old enough to go into a tavern, circa 1974. Over the years the layout has changed and expanded, and it has always been a popular spot. I could understand that in the 1970s, but now? I just don't get it. Nothing has really changed, and stepping into the Aquarius is like taking a short trip backwards in a local time machine.

This tavern is still VERY popular, but I swear I'm seeing the same people here in 2008 that I saw in 1974. Most of my companions this evening were personally familiar with the staff, even as far as arranging their next get-togethers at each other's houses! Somehow the management has managed to make the joint popular and keep the same people coming back all the time. I will not conjecture as to how this came about.

We stopped into the Aquarius on a Friday evening for a meal as a prelude to playing a few games of pool elsewhere; old friends getting together to lie to each other about how good their lives are, etc. Good times. I bet some of my friends could just have said "The usual" to the waitress and have received the same thing they'd had for the past decade or so; Tenderloin tips platter; Italian Cutlet with spaghetti, etc.

My wife and I arrived about 20 minutes before our friends, and, being rather hungry, ordered nachos as a shared appetizer. Nachos. In a pub. Can't go wrong, you would think. Incorrect. The menu said the nachos were "Nachos with meat sauce, hot peppers and cheese"; and the waitress asked us if we wanted sour cream! OF COURSE we want sour cream, these are nachos! These people have NO IDEA what nachos are supposed to be. If there were hot peppers on this, I didn't taste them. The meat sauce was just a house spaghetti sauce with no real character, and the cheese was virtually tasteless. And the nacho chips themselves were soggy. Pointless. This was about the most pointless order of nachos I've ever eaten. No flavor, no heat, no peppers, no nothing. Pointless. Either strike them from the menu or get it in gear and put some salsa, sliced jalapeño peppers and cheese you can TASTE on them.

For our main course, after the arrival of the rest of the troupe, my wife and I each ordered the "BBQ Beef & Mozza Melt". Sounded good. Boring, boring, boring. This came with fries (frozen) and cole slaw (utilitarian at best), on a kaiser-type bun. The bun was good. The beef was not BBQ, it was sliced roast beef with generic BBQ sauce, and processed mozzarella slices.

OK, I do realize this is pub food, but does that always have to mean third-rate? At BEST this was third-rate.

While I will probably return to the Aquarius Tavern to meet friends and hoist a jar or two, I will not come here specifically for the food; the entire place, menu included, needs to pull its head out of its fundament and get with the current century. I can't imagine how this place survives. When all the people who know each other here start dying off... this place will be in trouble.

I agree, took friends there from out of town, food was NOT GOOD, waiter was rude and arrogant, water was dripping thru roof is 4 spots where buckets sat to catch it all around our table. Order took a VERY long time coming out, portions were small...

  • The Aquarius is a totally authentic Saint John experience -a bit like walking back into the 70's. It is a no frills, sometimes noisy Maritime tavern. That being said, it is a friendly place with nice staff. The steak and scallops (deep fried or sauteed) are surprisingly good - nothing fancy, but washed down with a Kieths or an Alpine beer, they hit the spot. If you are tired of eating at the hotel and want a bit of real local culture (for better or worse) it is worth the cab ride. Competent local cover bands play to enthusiastic patrons on the weekend. (Come early or late, depending on whether this appeals to you or not)
